What are organic and organic tea?

Mitä ovat luomu ja luomutee?

Some of our tea packages carry the green Luomu label. Have you thought about what that means? Many products can be said to be organic, but the Organic certificate is only awarded to those products whose content meets the exact conditions of EU organic production. This is how the Organic label guarantees consistent quality.

We gathered information about organic, organic labeling and organic tea. Welcome to the world of organic!

WHAT HAPPENS IN ORGANIC PRODUCTION?

The word organic refers to all farming that is done without pesticides and chemical fertilizers. All measures necessary for the cultivation of plants are carried out respecting nature and taking care of the environment. Avoiding chemicals takes care of the condition of the land, offers even better conditions for farmers and, of course, offers a wonderful taste experience to those who eat the product - in the case of tea, the drinkers.

In organic production, weight is not given to the fastest or largest possible growth. Instead, we value as much natural growth as possible. Organic production has made farmers pay attention to local weather conditions and soil. The cultivation method should fit the environment as well as possible, so that the plants can grow according to the natural growth process. The same method of education is therefore not suitable for all places, no matter how natural it is.

In addition to the surrounding nature, local wildlife is attracted to organic production. Ladybugs, bees and many other insects also help plant growth with their natural activity. They repel pests and can protect plants from mold formation.

Even if the product's raw materials were grown naturally and in accordance with organic principles, it still does not automatically ensure receiving the Organic label. After the cultivation phase, the manufacturing of the product is also taken into account. The products must be made without unnecessary additives, such as coloring and sweeteners. That's why Nordqvist's Luonno tea has also been stripped of all excess, leaving only a natural, charming taste.

ORGANIC IMPACTS THE ENVIRONMENT

Organically grown food has charmed many consumers, but organic is also important on a wider scale. The land used for organic farming recycles raw materials, is kinder to surface and groundwater bodies, and binds carbon better than land used for conventional farming.

Organic products are grown in a country whose nutrients are taken care of naturally. The country's fertilizers are not produced industrially, but by utilizing ingredients from food production. This saves extractable, non-renewable natural resources and makes use of otherwise unnecessary material.

In agriculture, it is sometimes a problem that nutrients are transported from the field to nearby water bodies. Then the surface and groundwater may react to the changes. One end result is eutrophication of the area's water bodies. In organic production, the crumb structure of the soil is considered favorable. Then the land holds onto its nutrients more strongly and protects the surrounding water bodies at the same time.

When dealing with climate change, there is a lot of talk about carbon sequestration and the Earth's carbon sink. Forests bind carbon and thus slow down global warming. Land intended for organic farming binds carbon better than ordinary farmland and thus promotes the well-being of the earth and its inhabitants.
